by Lisa on Dec.07, 2009, under SEO

I'm sure you've heard of social media sites like Facebook, Digg, Twitter, and YouTube.  These kinds of networking sites allow you to build a community of people who can help spread the word about you and your website.  Social media sites are a way for others to share your content.  YouTube is a video share site or video social media site designed to do the same with you video content.  You can use social media websites to generate traffic and buzz, and to build links to your website.  SMO or social media optimization is just an extension of your SEO efforts.  You can use social media to generate links that can help your website rank well organically in search engines. There are a number of social media sites.  I've listed only some of those sites here.
  • Facebook
  • MySpace
  • StumbleUpon
  • MyBlogLog
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • YouTube
  • Digg
  • Sphinn
  • Del.icio.us
  • Revver
There is a common misconception that only teenagers use social media sites, millions of adults also use social media sites to stay in touch with old friends and family members.  An increasing number of businesses are using social media sites to manage reputation, build brand recognition, promote products, and generate awareness. In the new SEO 2.0, search engines will rank sites higher based on their inbound links from social networks.  Search engines like Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc. want to provide users with quality, relevant, and valuable search results.  There are a number of algorithms in place to protect against spamming sites.  There are also still many other factors, over 200 in fact just with Google that is used when determining where a site should rank within search results. Keep reading my blog as I will post many articles about this top and other SEO topics.
