So What Is Your Business Supposed to Be Blogging About?

by Lisa on Jan.03, 2010, under Blogging

So you've come to one of the free advertising seminars that the Palm Beach Post has hosted. You've listened very closely and scribbled down so many notes. And right now you're thinking, "What do I do with it all? Where do I start?" Everyone knows I am 100% for businesses involving themselves in social media and blogging. I'm gong to take blogging just a little further and give you some ideas of what you should blog about.   So here's a list of items that you should remember when maintaining a blog whether within your own website or as a stand alone blog.

  • Figure out who your perfect customer is and write every single blog post to him or her.

Who are the people who would most benefit from your business’ products or services?  Who are the people who need what you got right now? Those people are your  audience.

  • Figure out what that person's biggest problem is that you solve and blog about that.

  • Blog about your customers' success, not what you know or do.

Why is a prospective customer reading your blog?  Because they’re investigating you.  They’re testing you. They’re getting to know you and they will begin to trust you. When you’re trying to attract leads and sales, you have to show your prospective customers that your existing customers are happy with you and successful use of your help.

  • Start an email newsletter.

  • Offer something valuable in exchange for subscribing.

This could be as simple as offering a free ebook or maybe even a free sample of your product.  People like to get stuff and they like to get it for free.  This is a great way to get the  attention of your readers.
  • Tell more stories.

  • Inject more of your personality into your writing.

  • Get more personal.

  • Deliver extra, unexpected value.

I hope the above information helps to get you started with your blog.  These are just some of the things that I have learned from other bloggers and wanted to share the information with you.  Feel free to give me a call or send me an email with any questions you may have.
Cheers!

Lisa, you hit the nail on the head with this one. Keep up the great ideas.

I jumped headfirst into blogging, social media and search engine marketing about a year ago.

I’ve come a long way, but I learn more every single day.

One of the things that I did first was measure my progress by the number of hits my content generated. While interesting, an ego boast and easily measurable, I realized quickly that it did zero for my bottom line.

For instance: I run a computer networking support firm that caters to South Florida businesses with 10 to 150 employees.

Some of my first posts were on things that interested me, not my target market.

I wrote about Quad-core Intel Xeon servers that were virtualized with Citrix XenServer. The articles that I wrote got massive hits, but to the wrong audience. I never had business owners and managers visiting the site – only geeks like me.

Gradually, I changed to writing specifically about our services: “DedicatedIT provides computer network support to small businesses. You should use us. BLAH BLAH BLAH.” This got much fewer hits, a lot more bounces and still generated very little revenue.

Finally, I got the point: tell stories about HOW we do our job and WHY people continue to use us year after year. Much more interesting reading, people stay on my site longer and dollars are up.

Our latest is on a computer network upgrade we did for a Lake Worth law firm.

    Adam,

I really appreciate you stopping by and also leaving some comments for my blog. Too often I see businesses who are blogging and not keeping their ideal customer in mind.

I’m glad you were able to have success with your blog through trial and error.

    Kudos to you!!

    Lisa
